These books will enrich, inform, educate, entertain and motivate. In no particular order (after the first one!)
Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand Nothing more need be said or written. This book has changed the lives of millions.
Restoring the American Dream - Robert Ringer This is the book that got me started thinking about Freedom, Liberty and Individual Responsibility. It was out of print but now it's back with updates. Contact Advocates for Self Governance (www.theadvocates.org) has copies.
The Law - Frederic Bastiat "It is impossible to introduce into society a greater change and a greater evil than this: the conversion of the law into an instrument of plunder." A masterpiece of style, brevity and common sense, The Law concisely presents the classic moral case for liberty and limited government. A classic examination of the distinction between "the law" and "the law perverted".
The Vision of the Annointed - Tom Sowell A succinct and definitive discussion of "The Elite" - and how they get that way. Also read Sowell's Race and Culture and The Quest for Cosmic Justice.
The Tyranny of Good Intentions - Paul Craig Roberts A difficult interview; a magnificent writer. The title tells it all.
Attention Deficit Democracy - James Bovard One of my good friends in the battle for the preservation of the Republic. His library of work which includes “Terrorism and Tyranny“, “The Bush Betrayal“,”Freedom in Chains” and “Lost Rights” should be in every liberty lovers library.
Guilty - Ann Coulter Listeners know Annie and I have been radio friends since the mid-90's and my show on KSFO/San Francisco. Listeners – and Annie – also know we agree on only the most basic parts of having and securing Freedom, being the quintessential Conservative she is. Still, her rapier wit and wordsmithing, along with her perpertual and deadly accurate broadsides against Liberals makes up for most of the blind eye she has for "her" side. No one cuts to the chase like Annie!
The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America - Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt The first and Last word on Government Training Camps (aka "Public School") and how Government, Elitists and Organized Labor conspired - and succeeded - in destroying the Individual and has produced a system that graduates Functional Illiterates (with great self-esteem) every June. If you've ever wondered Why Johnny Can't Read - or Think, Reason or Objectively Analyze, this is the book for you.
Do The Right Thing - Dr. Walter E. Williams One of a handful of Walter's great works. Logical arguments, a pleasure to read and educational - all from The People's Economist! One of my oldest friends, in and out of broadcasting. If it has Walter's name on it, read it.
The Samurai, The Mountie and The Cowboy - David Kopel There are many fine books on guns, gun culture, the sanctity of the 2nd Amendment. This one started it all - a comprhensive look at how guns and gun laws are seen and treated in other countries, as well as our own. It provides the facts one needs to form and opinion, understand the news and win the arguments.
Unintended Consequences - John Ross Read it. Then write your own review!
Beautiful Losers - Samuel Francis Here's one for all Thinking Conservatives. Maybe he wasn't always a curmudgeon, but he was the 3 times I interviewed him. While he was, indeed ...difficult ...in the Q&A of Talk radio, I learned many things just from those 90 minutes of conversation; even more from this book. The man who invented the presecient term "anarcho-tyranny".
Libertarianism - David Boaz From the VP of the Cato Institute. If you want to know, learn it here.
Eco-Sanity - Joseph Bast First met/interviewed Joseph while on WWRC/DC in the early 90’s. He has gone on to make the Heartland Institute one of the most outstanding think tanks in America. He has recruited and surrounded himself with some of the most talented thinkers available today. Visit their web site, Heartland.org and submerge yourself in their wonderful works defending and propogating the ideals of Freedom.
Three by Thomas E. Woods Jr.: Meltdown, Nullification and Rollback . In Meltdown, you will learn the truth about what really happened between Wall Street and Washington that created the financial debacles we will be dealing with for generations; Nullification is the guide to the Constitutional solution for "ObamaCare" and other cramdowns from Washington to the States to you; Rollback, Tom's seminal work to date, will show you just how dangerous Washington has become to our future and our families.
Crimes Against Liberty - David Limbaugh. Rush's smarter brother. The title says it all.
The Revolution and End The Fed - Congressman Ron Paul
Speaking of Liberty - Lew Rockwell The book is united by a set of fixed principles: the corruption of politics, the universality and immutability of the ideas of freedom, the centrality of sound money and free enterprise, the moral imperative of peace and trade, the importance of hope and tenacity in the struggle for liberty, and the need for everyone to join the intellectual fight. We all have searched for the book we could give to friends and neighbors, business associates and family members, to explain why we believe in the cause of liberty. Speaking of Liberty is that book.
Lies The Government Told You - Judge Andrew Napolitano "Judge Napolitano's tremendous knowledge of American law, history, and politics, as well as his passion for freedom, shines through Lies The Government Told You, as he details how throughout American history, politicians and government officials have betrayed the ideals of personal liberty and limited government. I am pleased to recommend this book to anyone who cares about the direction of this country and wants to understand how we got where we are, and what we need to do to regain our liberties." Congressman Ron Paul, MD (R-TX)
