Walter's Free Gift

Image
Story #37 in “ 50 Stories 50 Years in Radio ”, tells how my friendship with Walter E. Williams began - one of those rare spontaneous moments in Talk radio that makes the format what it is (was). Over two decades of guesting on my shows around the county as well as when occasionally filling in for Rush Limbaugh, Walter was outspoken about freedom, liberty and asinine government programs – especially Affirmative Action, race quotas, minimum wage and all that undermined the integrity of African Americans, individually, as a community as well as all Americans regardless of race.. That he did this with logic, experience and a rapier wit made his words all that more impactful and he more revered. His untimely passing December 1, 2020 on the campus of George Mason University took from us his humor and wisdom America so desperately needs today. I don’t recall when he first made it available, but an enduring feature of having Walter as a guest was whenever he bestowed on some worthy caller h

Stupid vs Evil – The Debate Continues

Image
Even if you’ve managed to avoid it so far, the time may come soon when you will be sucked into the cul-du-sac debate: which is worse – Stupid or Evil? Both sides will likely quote Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer who lived through the rise of the Nazis, ultimately tortured and executed for his outspoken opposition to Hitler and the Third Reich. At bottom, he opined Stupid people were the worst and most dangerous mainly due to their unpredictability. Evil people were more easily recognized and could be controlled with force, if necessary. Stupid people don’t think they’re stupid. According to Bonhoeffer, “stupidity” isn’t defined by the trappings of ‘smartness’. There are human beings who are of remarkably agile intellect yet stupid, and others who are intellectually quite dull yet anything but stupid.” Personally, I’ve always argued Evil was the worst. While Bonhoeffer may have been correct about the dangers of unidentifiable, unpredictable Stupid people, that doesn’t categorically

Happiness vs. Freedom

Image
Remind you of anyone: “ The greater part of the population is not very intelligent, dreads responsibility, and desires nothing better than to be told what to do. Provided the rulers do not interfere with its material comforts and its cherished beliefs, it is perfectly happy to let itself be ruled .” Aldous Huxley The author of the classic Brave New World had lots of interesting things to say about Life and other fun stuff. For instance, while there are those who are “perfectly happy to let [themselves] be ruled”, Huxley also said: “ Actual happiness always looks pretty squalid in comparison with the overcompensations for misery. And, of course, stability isn't nearly so spectacular as instability. And being contented has none of the glamour of a good fight against misfortune, none of the picturesqueness of a struggle with temptation, or a fatal overthrow by passion or doubt. Happiness is never grand. ” Most people spend their time either avoiding anxiety or seeking pleasure. Perso

Nuggets of News

Image
Everywhere you look or listen, you’ll find your fellow citizens (and you, too?) complaining about the liberal news media. While Liberal vs Conservative has been argued in pamphlets and newsletters since 1776, the tone and content of ‘the news’ took a major turn with the arrival of daily newspapers, then radio and television newscasts. On June 1, 1980, Ted Turner and his brand-new Cable News Network, brought the world the 24-hour News Cycle. (I was privileged to be a member of the ‘CNN Original Cast’ that day in Atlanta). It didn’t take long for a gaggle of look-alikes to fill up the news consumer’s daily menu with everything from All News to All Sports outlets and every subsection in-between. You would think such a cornucopia of choices would satisfy the most discerning news addict. But no! Like Baskin-Robbin, one has a multitude of choices – but they’re all ice cream. When sorting news stations by political content, one has the notably liberal ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR and cable outlets CN
